Biomedical and Traditional Acupuncture for Health Professionals

The Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Laboratory of the PADA is organizing a Training Programme for the training of physiotherapists and physicians in Biomedical and Traditional Acupuncture. The programme is completed with the assistance of the Hellenic Physiotherapy Society of Algae (EFEA – Non-Profit Association). The practical part of the training is assisted by institutions such as the 1st Orthopaedic Clinic of the University of Athens, the Anatomy Department of the Medical School of Athens, the Pain Clinic of the Aretaios Hospital, the Greek TaiJi Health Center and other public and private health service providers.

The object of the program is the teaching of the therapeutic technique of acupuncture and in particular traditional and biomedical acupuncture and their accompanying techniques. The main objective of the programme is to enable the Health Care Professional, through the scientifically correct, effective and safe use of acupuncture and all accompanying techniques, to treat those pathological conditions related to his/her profession. In order to achieve this objective, a learning environment is created which enables the trainees to acquire the knowledge, skills and practical competence required to be able to be autonomous in their profession in the use of acupuncture.
In detail, the teaching modules to be taught are 7 and relate to a total of 300 hours:
– DE1: Introduction to acupuncture and neurophysiology of its action
– DE2: Acupuncture in Traditional Chinese Medicine
– CA3: Trigger Points and Acupuncture
– CA4: Biomedical Acupuncture
– DE5: Special Techniques in Acupuncture
– IC6: Clinical Reasoning and Practice in Acupuncture Pathology Rehabilitation
– DE7: Practical Training in Public Hospitals, Private Places and at the Anatomy Department of the Athens Medical School

The courses are held in the special training area of the HEFEA, in the premises of the PADA, in the Pain Clinic of the Aretaios Hospital, in the Anatomy Department of the Athens Medical School (Athens University of Athens) and in other clinical practice areas (surgeries, physiotherapy laboratories, rehabilitation centres). Some educational events take place in the auditoriums of the PADA.
The programme is aimed exclusively at graduates of medical and physiotherapists with a professional licence or graduates of the relevant schools.

If the maximum number of candidates in each cycle is exceeded, candidates will be assessed according to the following criteria:

formal qualifications (PhD, MSc, BSc)
the degree of the bachelor’s degree
the candidate’s research/published work; and
the candidate’s clinical work.
