Dr George Georgoudis is a full Professor at the Department of Physiotherapy in the University of West Attica, Athens, Greece with an expertise in “physiotherapy assessment and treatment of painful musculoskeletal disorders”. He is also the Director of the Research Laboratory of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of West Attica.
He has been awarded his Bachelor degree (BSc Hons) from the Department of Physiotherapy of the Technological Educational Insitution in Athens (1994). His postgraduate studies (Master of Science in Physiotherapy – 1996), were completed at the Graduate Medical School, at the Victoria University of Manchester, in the field of musculoskeletal pain and its management, with related education/expertise in Biomechanics, Orthopedic Medicine Rehabilitation, and Pain Management. His MSc dissertation was related to the fibromyalgia syndrome and the re-establishment of its diagnostic criteria.
His PhD studies were completed in the Centre for Rehabilitation Sciences at the Medical School of the University of Manchester (2003), in the field of musculoskeletal pain (myofascial trigger points) and its diagnosis through palpation and algometry.
He has worked in Greece and abroad in large public hospitals like “Tzaneion” general hospital (2000-2008), in public hospitals in UK (1994-2000) (Hope Hospital in Manchester- Manchester Royal Infirmary – Stocton-on-Tees General Hospital), in research centres (Behavioral Medicine Research Unit, University of Manchester – Manchester Welcome Trust, Manchester), as research director (Research Laboratory of Musculoskeletal & Chest Physiotherapy, University of West Attica), and in the private sector (Private Practices in UK – Owner and CEO of the PHYSIOPAIN group with 3 practices in Athens/Piraeus, 2000-2019)
His work experience includes, at clinical and research level, the physiotherapy services of the Pain Clinic Unit at the “Aretaieion” Hospital (2016-), the creation and the functioning of the Pain Clinic Unit at the “Tzaneion” Hospital, Piraeus (2004-2008), the establishment and Directorship of the Greek TaiJi Health Center, at the University of West Attica, in collaboration with the Traditional Chinese Medicine University of Shanghai (2018-)
He has a clinical specialization in Pain Management (University of Manchester 1995-1996) and in Needling techniques (Biomedical and Traditional acupuncture, dry needling) (TCM University of Shanghai 2017, 2018, 2019), together with the clinical specialization in the management of musculoskeletal disorders with Injection Therapy (University of Manchester 2001 – license to practice).
He is a member of the Panhellenic Society of Physiotherapy (PSF) in Greece and of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in UK (MCSP), and he is also registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC) in UK. He has been nominated President of various scientific organizations in Greece (Hellenic Scientific Society of Physiotherapy, 2005 – Hellenic Physiotherapy Society of Algology, 2010-2019), Vice-President at the International Association of Acupuncture Physical Therapists – IAAPT, 2012-, subgroup of the World Confederation of Physical Therapy societies WCPT), representative of Greece for Physiotherapy on acupuncture and related techniques (PSF, 2017-), member in many international scientific organizations like the International Society for the Study of Pain – IASP, etc.
His research and published work on his field of expertise is abudant, with a large number of presentations in national and international congresses (150+ presentations), a great number of scientific publications (50+) in high impact factor journals, a wide recognition among scientists (citations factor 1000+), his participation and teaching in MSc programs (at the Ioannina Medical School-University of Ioannina, the Athens Medical School-Capodistrian University of Athens, TEI of Patras), his supervised PhD dissertations with the Capodistrian University of Athens, University of West Attica in Athens), his participation in state funded research projects in Greece, Cyprus and UK, his managerial duties (President of the Occupational Therapy Department & Director of Research Laboratory, University of West Attica).
